Gender pay gap is reducing: Dr Lydia Abela

In an address she gave at the end of a conference with the theme ‘Are we there yet?’ held in the building of the Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Lydia Abela,the wife of the Prime Minister claimed that together we can bring about social, cultural and even change economic to not tolerate any kind of discrimination.

In the conference organized by Vassallo Group on the eve of International Women’s Day, Dr. Abela noted that the country has moved forward in terms of the difference in salaries between women and men, the one known as gender pay gap. While she stressed that Malta still has a long way to go in this regard, she noted how the wage gap has dropped to 10% and below the European average, however she pointed out that we must continue to work towards total equality.

Lydia Abela also mentioned the need for more participation of women in fields related to science, technology and engineering among others. She said that it is necessary to have more women working in fields related to innovation and artificial intelligence, sectors of the present and the future.

In her address, Dr. Abela also referred to gender-based violence as a difficult reality in society and welcomed more steps to combat this social challenge. Here she also mentioned Malta’s role in the United Nations Security Council where on the agenda is the theme in favor of gender equality.

Dr Lydia Abela said that different stakeholders are important to continue to come together in the emancipation of women and for more women to be at the heart of decisions in a more equal society.
