Japan will open an embassy in Malta

Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg welcomed positively the confirmation of the allocation of funds by the Japanese Government in order to open an embassy in Malta.

In September 2022, Minister Ian Borg met with the Japanese Foreign Affairs Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly while attending the state funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe where, during this his first visit to Japan, the minister took the opportunity to hold several meetings with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations with this country.

“It is gratifying that the diplomatic effort made in recent months in order to improve the bilateral relationship with this country in various fields has begun to bear the desired fruit and I am convinced that with the opening of the Japanese Embassy in Malta, bilateral relations with this country as well as trade between the two countries shall have a stronger platform to continue to be strengthened in the coming years,” said Minister Ian Borg, in reaction to this news.

The decision of the Japanese Government was also communicated directly to Minister Borg by Minister Hayashi during another bilateral meeting held by the two ministers in New York last week.
