Works are underway by Infrastructure Malta in Triq tas-Sejba in Mqabba which suffered extensive damage. This road was being used as a diversion route due to the ongoing works next to the airport and is crucial for connectivity, particularly for residents in Mqabba, Qrendi and Siġġiewi. Through this €1.5 million investment, the agency is building an independent structure for this road with reinforced foundations.
It was explained that the road was at risk of collapsing and therefore, in view of this public safety concern, Infrastructure Malta restricted vehicular access in this area and started the required road consolidation and reconstruction works immediately.
During a visit to the site with Infrastructure Malta CEO Ivan Falzon, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects Aaron Farrugia emphasised that the safety of residents and those working in the garages in this particular street was an absolute priority.
“Many residents and employees informed us that this road had sustained significant damage over the years, and only temporary repairs were ever done. As a result, this time round, it was decided that long-lasting work is to be done even though this will take longer to complete. In this way, we can provide peace of mind to all those who use this street in the future,” Minister Farrugia stated.
Before commencing with the necessary structural work, the agency’s contractor began on-site geo-technical testing at the end of December last year. These studies confirmed that the road was standing on weak foundations. The drilling of cores for the concrete piles started as soon as the completion of these surveys.
To build the new foundations of the road, Infrastructure Malta is inserting 49 steel-reinforced concrete piles, varying from 8.5 metres (2.5 storeys) up to 40 metres (12 storeys) deep into the ground. 60% of these piles are already in place. Permanent steel casing around the steel-reinforced concrete piles will further ensure a stronger foundation for this road. Other works of this project include sewer, telecommunication and electrical network connections and a new asphalt surface.
Infrastructure Malta plans to complete the work in the second quarter of this year.
