The Minister for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici and the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli, together with the Mayor of Marsaxlokk Steven Grech, inaugurated a new transport service in the community as well as the reopening of swings.
These two projects were financed by funds of the Local Government Division through a number of schemes. The Local Government Division financed the Marsaxlokk Local Council with just over €13,000 from the ‘Capital Projects – Accessibility and Mobility’ scheme for the purchase of a van.
Through this van, the local council will offer a free transport service to the elderly to be taken to an appointment at the general hospital or other clinics. This year, the Local Council of Marsaxlokk was also financed by the scheme ‘Financing for the Development and Improvement in the Conditions of the Playing Fields in the localities in Malta and Gozo’ in the amount of a little more from €38,000 from the Local Government Division for improvement work in the Maghluq swings.
Minister Bonnici claimed that these schemes will contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of the residents of Marsaxlokk and stressed that with this work, the government, hand in hand with the local council, is making a difference. He called for more local councils to participate in schemes that are carried out from time to time for the ultimate benefit of the residents.
Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civilli claimed that it is the right of every person to live an independent life. “Therefore we will continue to invest in ways so that every resident has easy access to the necessary daily services,” stressed Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli. She also said that, “The Local Government is committed that in the year 2023 it will continue to finance schemes in favor of more open spaces and a better environment in the Maltese and Gozitan localities, because the quality of life is at the heart of the work of ‘ this government”.
The Mayor of Marsaxlokk Steven Grech praised both initiatives and said that the work of improving the swings was necessary. “The swing is very popular and is enjoyed both by the locals and by those who frequent the location of Marsaxlokk. An old and broken device was removed and replaced with a more modern one, and we also added swings for disabled people,” said Mr. Grech. Several members of the Marsaxlokk Local Council were also present at the news conference.
