€21 million project in the educational complex in Rabat, Gozo is in an advanced phase

The construction work of the new primary school and the expansion and modernization of the middle school in the educational campus in Rabat, Gozo, with an investment of €21 million, is in an advanced phase.

The new school will replace the one that is there at the moment and that has been built for 160 years, and will be in a different place from the existing one, but in the complex’s own campus.

“This is another investment that we are making not only in the educational infrastructure, but a direct investment in our educators and students,” said the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima, who together with the Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri visited the work being done. “We are working to see that our schools are modern, suitable for today’s times and that they have a suitable atmosphere for both the educators and the students of the country,” explained Minister Grima.

This project is considered the only one of its kind in our country, because the educational campus includes a child welfare center, kindergarten, primary school, middle school, senior school, as well as the sixth form, and many sports facilities. The Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri spoke about the various projects going on in Gozo in the educational sector, including this campus.

“The new primary school will have 16 classes for the years of primary education and 10 classes for kindergarten. The school will also have classes for specific subjects, including for the teaching of science, information technology and art,” said Minister Camilleri.

He stressed how this complex, which will be spread over 8,000 square meters, will have 3,000 square meters used for children’s sport and recreation. Site excavation work began in April 2020 and construction began in November of the same year. The excavation and construction were carried out under the supervision of archaeologists from the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage because archaeological remains were found on the site and their analysis is currently being carried out.

In order for these archaeological remains to be well preserved, an archaeological interpretation center will be built which will be part of the school building. This will help the students not only in their studies but also in the awareness of the importance of respecting and cherishing the cultural and historical heritage.
