Children’s allowance payments are paid at the new rates

Payments of the children’s allowance have started, covering the first three months of next year. These annual payments are given ahead of schedule to help families plan their finances better during these festive and fun times.
The payments of the children’s allowance will be paid until tomorrow on Saturday the 17th of December, with some of the payments already made during this week, for those people who receive this payment directly in ‘a bank account. These payments will be reflecting the increase announced by the Government in the Budget for the year 2023.
In this payment for the period January-March 2023, the Government is investing the sum of almost €12 million, while the first three payments for this year amounted to a total of €33,446,454.
The Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights Michael Falzon conveyed these details in a news conference on Friday, December 16, 2022, where he also spoke about the payments linked to the additional mechanism of the COLA, which will also be paid at the end of the week.

 The Child Allowance Supplement for the next year has been increased from €17.50 to €40 every three months for those who do not exceed the amount of €25,924, while for those who exceed this amount, it has been increased from €12.50 to €35.
It must also be remembered that the Allowance for Children with Special Needs this year was increased from €25 per week to €30 and that this rate will continue to be paid also for the next year. “I remind you that as part of this plan, throughout this legislature, we will stick to our promise to continue improving the Children’s Allowance, by gradually doubling the supplement that is given, for every child under the age of sixteen years. The first step has started to be taken now and will be complete next year, when each parent will see an increase of €90 in the supplement paid for each child. According to the family’s income this supplement will be €140 or €160,” stated Minister Michael Falzon.
Meanwhile, in the year 2020 the Bonus was also introduced for those who have a baby. This was €300 for each birth and this year it was increased to €400 and the same amount will continue to be paid for next year. In total, 3034 people who had a child or adopted a child from abroad benefited.
Minister Michael Falzon also spoke about the additional mechanism of the COLA, a benefit that started to be given for the first time and that will also be paid at the end of this week. In fact, over 40,852 families will start receiving the additional COLA grant in their bank account.
These once-a-year payments vary from a minimum of €100 to a maximum of €1,200 for each household. The amount that will be paid in this installment amounts to €13,779,975. Those who were not caught in this process will be paid in the next installment of next year.
