Republic Day commemorates the occasion Malta revised its constitution and effectively became a Republic. As a result, Malta was no longer under Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, and instead appointed the first President of the Republic of Malta, Sir Anthony Mamo. On the occasion of the 48th anniversary from Republic Day, Festivals Malta through the National Festivals Committee, together with the Office of the President will organise several activities in commemoration of this day.
On Tuesday 13 December on Republic Day, at 10:00 in the morning, a ceremonial parade will be organised by the Armed Forces of Malta, that will be attended by the country’s highest authorities including Dr George Vella, President of Malta and Robert Abela, the Prime Minister, among other distinguished guests. Festivals Malta invites the public to attend this ceremony in St George Square, Valletta. At 11:00 in the morning there will be an investiture ceremony and the awarding of medals in the Grand Council Hall, in the Grand Master’s Palace, Valletta. All these events will be broadcast live on TVM News+.
At 1:00 in the afternoon, the President of Malta will place a memorial wreath on Republic Day monument in Marsa.
Other activities in commemoration of the Republic Day National Holiday are as follows:
Monday 12 December – a march by St. Anthony’s Band Club of Birkirkara along Republic Street, Valletta, at 6:00 in the evening.
Tuesday 13 December – a march by King’s Own Band Club of Valletta along Republic Street, Valletta, starting at 5:30 in the evening.
