The Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli visited restoration work carried out on rubble walls in the locality of Iklin, with an investment of just over €140,000. 20% of the funds were financed by the Local Government, while 80% of the funds were financed by European funds after the local council applied for funds from the European Union under the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
“The restoration work carried out on these rubble walls not only increased the beauty of the environment in this locality, but preserved the historical and environmental heritage of our country which will continue to be enjoyed by generations futures,” said Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli. She also praised the commitment and dedication of the local council that worked to obtain these additional funds from the European Union.
During the visit, the Mayor of Iklin Dorian Sciberras explained that apart from the fact that these stone structures in the fields and farms are part of our Maltese historical and environmental heritage, they also serve environmental functions another.
“Their main objective is the conservation of the soil in the fields, so that the soil is not carried away and lost with the rainwater. An entire ecosystem also lives in the rubble walls, so it is very important that no stones are removed and no vandalism is done on these walls,” stressed the mayor of Iklin.
The parliamentary secretary encouraged more local councils to make use of additional funds such as funds from the European Union, apart from the schemes issued by the Local Government Division, in order to continue serving the needs of their localities and residents. .
The restoration and reconstruction on the rubble walls took place in Sqaq in-Namur, Sqaq Giarda, part of Triq il-Għargħur and Triq Richard Taylor, in Iklin.
