Malta made little of their FIFA World Ranking as they drew 2-2 with Greece in an international friendly at Ta’Qali.
The early play saw Malta enjoy the better possession creating several good chances.
Degabriele surged forward from the left inside the opening five minutes but could not find a finishing touch.
He went close minutes later when Mbong sent him through but again, the final touch did not find the net.
The forward runs of Malta were causing problems for Greece but it was the visitors who took the lead. Against the run of play, with five minutes of the first half remaining, captain Bakasetas picked up the ball inside the box and beat Bonello in the bottom corner.
Malta did not let up and continued pushing forward and their efforts paid off early in the second half when a good play by Dimech and Guillaumier set up Degabriele in the box who kept his composure to fire Malta level.
That goal sent the South End Core supporters into cloud nine and ten minutes later they were in orbit as Teddy Teuma scored from the penalty spot to put Malta in front for the first time in the match.
A memorable victory looked on the cards only for Greece to spoil the party in the dying minutes. Fountas latched onto a rebound clearance to beat Bonello from close range and dash Malta’s dream of a win against much fancied opponents.
2-2 it finished but Malta had plenty to celebrate. Now they should relish the prospect of the Republic of Ireland on Sunday. That should be a cracker of a game.
