An Expression of Interest has been announced for the regional councils to benefit from a scheme for the development and improvement of automatic public latrines in localities around Malta and Gozo, with an investment of more than two million euros.
This was announced by the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli together with the Directorate for Strategy and Policy Implementation within the Local Government Division.
It was explained that each regional council has the opportunity to benefit from a fund up to a maximum of €360,000 from which a minimum of 6 local councils within each regional council should benefit.
The Parliamentary Secretary said that, “Through this expression of interest we will be carrying out another electoral measure, by financially assisting the regional councils so that they are in a position to provide help to the local councils. This is so that public latrines with automatic cleaning systems, using the latest technology available and powered by ecological energy systems, will be introduced in the towns and villages around Malta and Gozo.”
She stressed that this scheme will lead to more adequate latrines that offer more hygiene, safety, cleanliness and accessibility, which are fundamental to human dignity. “This scheme is one of a series of financial assistance that the Local Government is giving to local councils in order to improve and bring public services closer to the citizens,” concluded Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli.
Director General of the Local Government Division Natalino Attard claimed that, “The advantage that this scheme will be coordinated on a regional basis is that the professional officers of the regional councils will assist the local councils within themselves in order to implement this project in their respective localities. Therefore, the implementation of public latrines is expected to be done in a more effective and economic way, due to the principle of economies of scale.”
Present for the launch of the Expression of Interest were also the Presidents and Executive Secretaries or representatives of the six Regional Councils.
