In the Garden of the Chinese in Santa Lucia, details were announced about an initiative with the local councils on the occasion of World Cleanup Day which is celebrated every year in several countries around the world. This year this day will be celebrated on Saturday, September 17.
39 local councils benefited from a fund of around €97,000 in order to organize cleaning and waste collection activities in their respective localities. The funds were financed by the Directorate for Strategy and Implementation within the Division for Local Government after a call for applications was issued for local and regional councils.
The local councils are most close to the residents. Therefore, the main objective of this initiative is for the councils to unite their respective communities in order to carry out a cleaning which will give the Maltese and Gozitan localities a cleaner appearance.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli said that, “Through this initiative we will be generating more knowledge and awareness about the need to keep public places clean while conveying a message to society that investment in cleanliness is an investment in our health.”
She encouraged the local councils to invite non-governmental organizations and other entities in the locality to join together for these activities.
The Director General for the Division for Local Government Natalino Attard explained that, “This occasion can also be one where the local councils serve as a means to involve the whole community in the activities they will organise.”
“I wish every success to the local councils in the implementation of the initiatives on World Cleanup Day that will lead to a cleaner environment in their respective localities,” concluded Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.
