Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg, on behalf of the Government of Malta, placed a wreath of flowers at the feet of the Cold War memorial in Birżebbuġa, on the day of funeral of the former leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev.
Gorbachev was a great man of honour who sacrificed his career for world peace, and a visionary leader who always worked in favour of peace around the world. In 1989, Mikhail Gorbachev and the United States of America President George H.W. Bush met in Malta for the Malta Summit, an important step towards the end of the Cold War.
