Hibernians, Hamrun Spartans and Gzira Utd have set a new record for Malta football by reaching the third qualifying round of a major European competition.
Premier champions Hibernians set the ball rolling with a 1-1 draw away to FC Levadia in Tallinn. That was enough to send Hibs into the third round of the Europa Conference League qualifiers on aggregate 4-3 score.
Gzira Utd came from behind three times in their second round tie against FK Radnicki Nis of Serbia to level the game and send the match into a penalty shoot-out. Gzira held their nerve to emerge winners and clinch their place in the third round.
One up from their first leg against FK Velez Mostar of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hamrun Spartans made sure of their place in the next round with another 1-0 win, this time at home at the Centenary Stadium.
