Minister for Public Works and Planning Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi has launched a public consultation on better rainwater management, in particular on buildings and public spaces.
Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi explained that a manual has been prepared that will serve as a guideline for innovative green infrastructure projects that lead to the protection and management of rainwater in natural, rural and urban environments. These guidelines are intended to assist various entities, ranging from governmental and private entities, local councils, voluntary organizations, businesses, professionals as well as the general public. This is to support Malta’s efforts in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
He stressed the importance of the water resource and explained how this infrastructure will lead to the collection of a larger amount of rainwater so necessary to continue greening our urban areas. The Minister reiterated how the vision of this project is to make these sustainable infrastructures the first choice instead of the methods that lead to most of the rainwater being mismanaged and therefore lost.
The public consultation document can be accessed from the Green Stormwater Infrastructure Guidance Manual (gov.mt) The public consultation closes on 29 July 2022.
