The NCPE congratulates Dr Roberta Metsola on her election as President of the European Parliament.
Throughout her career in the European Parliament, Dr Metsola worked incessantly to uphold and promote human rights and equal treatment in different areas for the benefit of alEuropeans, focusing particularly on persons at risk of discrimination or in vulnerable circumstances. During her parliamentary service and different roles within the European Parliament she steered and endorsed dossiers addressing various facets related to human rights, equality, anti-discrimination, the fight against homophobia, migration and asylum.
The election of one of Malta’s first female MEPs to such a prominent post in the highest echelons of political debate and decision-making in the European Union is truly promising. Being the youngest EP President ever elected and the third female President of the European Parliament, Dr Metsola is a significant role model towards the achievement of equality in political decision- making in Malta and beyond.
Dr Metsola’s commitment towards the European Union’s common values and principles of equality, diversity, the celebration of differences, and equal opportunities as well as her commitment to serve as an ally to the vulnerable and to persons who suffer discrimination, is truly an inspiration that will enhance the achievement of equality in the European society at large.
