The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) would like to inform the public of the product recalls being made following a series of tests conducted by the authority as part of an EU-wide project. The name of the products, identification details and photos are included with this press statement. Some of these toys were being made available to Maltese consumers online from countries outside the EU.
The products are being recalled as they do not comply with the requirements of the Toy Safety Directive and applicable European standards. The toys contain small parts that can be swallowed thus blocking the child’s flow of air, prohibited chemicals for consumer products, and/or packaging presenting a risk of strangulation or asphyxiation to children, amongst others.
Consumers who had bought these products should refrain from using them and appropriately dispose of them or, where possible, return them to the retailer from where they bought them. Retailers are obliged to redress consumers, which remedy can take the form of a repair, where possible, or replacement of the recalled product with a safe one. When buying toys, consumers are advised to ensure that the product bears the name and address of the manufacturer and importer, and a type, batch, serial or model number or other element allowing their identification. This information may also be provided on the packaging or in a document accompanying the toy, where the size or nature of the product does not allow it.
Consumers are also advised to check whether the product they intend to buy has been recalled by visiting online recall databases for unsafe product such as Safety Gate (https://ec.europa.eu/safety-gate-alerts/screen/webReport). Furthermore, when buying online, consumers should look at reviews and be aware of who they are really buying from.
Despite all precautions taken, consumers may still face problems linked to product safety. Consumers are encouraged to report such problems to the seller and the online platform, and inform the MCCAA. Consumers are also encouraged to write a review on the product and seller to alert other potential consumers.
For any queries or further information, one may contact the MCCAA on marketsurveillance@mccaa.org.mt.
