World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic has had his visa to enter Australia revoked shortly after arriving in Melbourne as a backlash over his vaccine exemption gathers pace.

Border officials announced he had not met entry rules and after being held at the airport, Djokovic was then taken to a government detention hotel.

The row is around an exemption he said he had to play in the Australian Open.

Djokovic is reported to have said he is against the Covid-19 vaccination.

“Non-citizens who do not hold a valid visa on entry or who have had their visa cancelled will be detained and removed from Australia,” the Australian Border Force (ABF) said in a statement.

Djokovic’s team have challenged the ABF decision and a Federal Court will hear the case next Monday.
