Germany’s new coalition government has said it would allow “the controlled sale of cannabis to adults for recreational purposes in licensed shops.”
The move by the centre-left government led by Olaf Scholz, is in sharp contrast to his predecessor Anglea Merkel who was against such a proposal.
At present it is not illegal to consume cannabis but it is illegal to buy the drug.
Other European countries such as Holland, Spain and Portugal tolerate the sale of the drug in designated “coffee shops” even though it is an offence to possess the drug.
