Malta Diabetes Association calls for priority for Covid booster for sufferers

The Maltese Diabetes Association urges once again the Health Authorities to provide the Covid-19 booster vaccine to persons living with chronic conditions like Diabetes as an urgent priority.

Such persons should avail themselves of the Covid-19 booster vaccine without further delay and before any other age groups. This is particularly relevant to those living with diabetes and who are much younger than the age groups announced recently.
Last year persons living with diabetes were given priority and were one of the first groups that took the vaccine since they were classified as “vulnerable”. The situation seems to be different this time round and persons living with diabetes will be taking their booster vaccine together with the general public, depending on their age group.

The International Diabetes Federation in a recent position statement issued last month has also appealed to healthcare systems and governments in Europe to urgently ensure that persons with diabetes get prioritized to receive COVID-19 booster injections as soon as possible.

We therefore make a heartfelt appeal to the health authorities to take the necessary steps to prioritize such persons in the vaccination programme to ensure that these persons are vaccinated without further delay to ensure they are adequately protected for the ongoing Covid-19 virus, especially now that the world is seeing a surge in Covid-19 cases predominantly due to a new variant.
