During a visit to Mtarfa, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg announced that with an investment of €600,000 and works to be carried out by the Public Works department, security works will commence on Gomorino Bridge, between Mtarfa and Mdina.
Minister Ian Borg said that the safety of the people remains among the top priorities for this government and mentioned how this bridge which also has historical significance requires work to be done with utmost care and attention so that the bridge is given to the people in the best possible condition and safety.
“With a portfolio ranging from community projects to national ones such as the Malta National Park, which we will soon be inaugurating the Adventure Park, the Public Works department is being of great service and is carrying out valuable work around our country. Apart from that, this bridge even has historical importance and therefore we felt the need that as we have done in many other interventions of this type we will be carrying out works of the highest quality so as to continue safeguarding these attractions which are part of the heritage left by our forefathers.”, said Minister Borg.
This bridge was completed in 1900 as part of the railway extension. The works that will be carried out include the restoration on the bridge parapet, new railings, new pavement, new and modern lighting, maintenance of existing trees and shrubs and the planting of native trees in the same area.
