The Minister for Social Housing Roderick Galdes and the Chief Executive of the Housing Authority Leonid McKay were present for a news conference at the new social housing site in Zurrieq where they launched a call for interest for the rental of garages and car parks in the new social housing sites.
In order not to put pressure on the communities living around the new social housing sites, they will all include a large space dedicated to parking and garages. They will be available not only to residents of social housing but also to the general public.
Minister Roderick Galdes explained that the increase in population in areas where there are social housing buildings is a factor that increases a certain pressure. “At this stage, thanks to the Housing Authority, we are offering 399 garages for rent. “In the future we will be making more parking available,” said the minister.
Applications for this scheme will open on Monday 11 October and close at the end of this year. Everyone is eligible to apply, unless the applicant in question does not own a garage already. Individuals living near the social housing site will be given preference. In the event that there is more than one applicant who wishes to rent a garage on the same site and there is the same length of distance, the decision of the tenant will be taken by ballot. Voluntary organizations wishing to apply under this scheme will be given priority regardless of the length of the distance.
