Infrastructure Malta performs more than 2,500 technical tests a year, equivalent to about six tests a day, to ensure quality infrastructure at both road and sea level, announced the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and -Capital Projects Ian Borg and Parliamentary Secretary for Consumer Protection and Public Hygiene Deo Debattista during a visit to one of the MCCAA laboratories in Mosta.
The Infrastructure Malta agency will be supporting the MCCAA to adopt new, more accurate and harmless testing methods and equipment.
The tests are varied and include an assessment of the strength of the concrete and asphalt, the precautions needed to avoid skidding on the roads as well as the retro-reflectivity of traffic signs and their extent. visible at night.
Minister Ian Borg argued that this quality assurance is essential in order to ensure infrastructure that is enjoyed by both today’s and future generations. “Where the work is not of good quality and then these tests show this, we are seeing that it comes off and is done again at the expense of the contractor concerned. That is what seriousness requires and we will continue to do so in order to ensure the highest quality infrastructure. “
An average of 25% of the tests performed by the Infrastructure Malta agency lead to remedial works or price reductions. In 2020, the agency enforced around € 1.3 million in price reductions for works that did not meet the required standards.
