Prime Minister Robert Abela inaugurated the Wied Fulija project in Zurrieq which turned a landfill, which over the years has collected about two billion kilograms of waste, into another open space for families.
This was done with an investment of € 4.5 million, co-financed by European funds, which translated into, among others, paved passages from where the public can enjoy the panoramic view of the surroundings and the planting of 43,000 trees. and shrub.
At the inauguration ceremony together with the Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia and the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, the Prime Minister explained that this project is a testament to the principle that the Government believes in, the need as a country to embark on projects that take us to another level.
“Our principle is not to be content with the obvious and the average, not to give up on challenges, but instead to turn them into an opportunity. One of the most beautiful landscapes we have in our country was buried under piles of waste, with the consequences it has on the environment, health and quality of life of all. But because we dreamed and because we were ambitious, we gave back this piece of land to the people. “
The Prime Minister stated that this is a project built on sustainability and the Government’s belief that the environment must become a higher priority.
“As we are even marking in the economic strategy for the next decade and in our country’s post-pandemic plan, the environment is not a burden, but an opportunity. The balance between economic growth and the environment has not always been easy. But, never before have we been in a position to do what we all want. Including by introducing concepts that we have not seen before in our country, including the first green walls and concepts such as green roofs. “
