High level government officials have been holding a series of crucial talks with a number of influential countries, including it is believed America, in an effort to get their support ahead of a crucial vote by FATF on Malta’s efforts to curb financial crime.
The Financial Action Task Force, (FATF), the inter-governmental body sets international standards that aim to prevent these illegal activities and the harm they cause to society. As a policy-making body, the FATF works to generate the necessary political will to bring about national legislative and regulatory reforms in these areas.
The recent positive report by the European body, Moneyval, may lean heavily in Malta’s favour.
Finance Minister Clyde Caruana has said that whatever the outcome of today’s vote, Malta will continue its efforts in combating financial crime and money laundering..
