Malta produced a battling performance against Kosovo to silence critics after a tired looking game against Northern Ireland.
Kosovo went in front in the first half when dangerman Rashica was put through by Kastrati and fired past Bonello.
There were some anxious minutes for Malta as Kosovo threatened to overwhelm them but Malta dug deep, regrouped and managed to create chances of their own. The best falling to Satariano who might have done better to shoot first time. Instead he saw his effort hit the side netting.
Malta were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box with a minute of normal time remaining. Dimech was quickest to the rebound and fired into the back of the net. There were a few anxious moments before the goal was confirmed and Malta went into the break level with higher ranked Kosovo.
As expected Kosovo came out after the break intent on regaining the lead but a well organised defence with Bonello at the back kept them at bay.
Carbolan had the best chance for Malta but fired wide.
Just as it seemed Malta would clinch a well earned draw, a poor defensive clearance set up Rashica for a simple tap-in.
Malta refused to give in and pressed forward but in the end just missed out.
A loss is still a loss but after the match coach Devis Mangia said he wanted a reaction from the players after the loss to Northern Ireland and he said for sure he got one. Malta could end their training camp in Austria with their heads up. A memorable moment as well when captain Andre Agius was presented a commemorative national team shirt by MFA President Bjorn Vassallo to mark his 100th game for Malta.
