Medicines Authority will discount 42 medicines that are available in the local market and covering conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease, antibiotics, anxiety, neurological conditions and osteoporosis. This while 29 quality generic medicines in compliance with European regulations were introduced in the Maltese market at a lower price of 73% of the price of alternative medicines already on the Maltese market.
This was announced at a news conference by the Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Clayton Bartolo and the Parliamentary Secretary for Consumer Rights and Public Cleanliness Deo Debattista.
Minister Clayton Bartolo said the accessibility of medicines is an ongoing challenge that requires a collective effort and full cooperation between all stakeholders.
“In our country we have a Medicines Authority that looks proactively at how consumers can have more affordable medicines at fair prices and a wide range of treatments in both the public and private sectors,” added Minister Clayton. Bartolo.
He stressed that this reduction is a clear demonstration of how much this government is protecting the health of all the people.
Parliamentary Secretary Deo Debattista explained that access to affordable medicines is fundamental to public health and economic growth.
“This time the biggest drop in medicines has been announced despite the pandemic and the challenges of Brexit,” said Parliamentary Secretary Deo Debattista.
He added that generic medicines that are effective and of the same quality have been introduced.
The parliamentary secretary concluded that this is a testament to how much for the current government, the health of the people is a priority while the work will continue to really strengthen this government.
