Various conservation and restoration projects have been inaugurated in the parishes of Dingli and Mġarr through the work carried out by the Foundation for the Cultural Heritage of the Archdiocese of Malta.
The projects were co-financed 80% by European Union funds, with a total investment of € 217,000. The projects were inaugurated by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Galea Curmi and by Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.
The Parliamentary Secretary explained how with European funds various sacred artefacts with a very rich history are being preserved.
Several works of art were restored in Dingli: 17 paintings of the Via Sagra, the pedestal and a niche of Our Lady of the Rosary, and the sixteenth-century statue of St. John the Baptist, which it is believed to have been brought to Malta by the Order of the Knights of St. John. The investment in Dingli amounted to € 99,000.
Parliamentary Secretary Zrinzo Azzopardi stressed that with these European funds we are continuing to strengthen the ecclesiastical heritage and make it richer so that it can be enjoyed not only by Maltese and Gozitans but also by all those who come to Malta. He announced that there are another number of parishes that will be benefiting from these funds so that this project will be a holistic one that will have a positive impact that will be felt by all.
