Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo welcomed the historic vote taken by the House of Representatives in Sirte, which gave confidence to the Government of National Unity led by Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dabaiba.
This is a highly encouraging sign of national unity and attests to the determination to commence an effective institutional transition and the implementation of the roadmap leading to elections by the end of December 2021.
Minister Bartolo also commended the unstinting efforts of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General Jan Kubis, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, and the participants of the Libyan Political Dialogue Framework as they continue to strive to achieve lasting peace and security in Libya.
As attested by the historical ties and longstanding friendship between both countries, Malta will continue to stand alongside the Libyan people, more so, at this crucial moment. In line with the Berlin Process, Malta is ready to extend its hand of cooperation to the interim executive authority as it charts through the next crucial phases of the institutional transition.
This constitutes an important opportunity for the complete implementation of the ceasefire agreement, the adoption of socio-economic reforms, and the launching of the national reconciliation process.
