Minister Miriam Dalli and Parliamentary Secretary Clifton Grima visited the San Ġwann FC sports club which benefited from lower energy bills thanks to a number of schemes managed by the Energy and Water Agency.
“San Ġwann Football Club is one of dozens of sports clubs that have benefited from this scheme which helps them to be more efficient in energy consumption. This investment made by the club does not only mean cheaper bills but an investment in sustainability, ”said Minister Dalli.
She urged organizations to continue investing in energy-efficient devices to make their operations environmentally sustainable with lower emissions.
Parliamentary Secretary Clifton Grima stressed that through this project, this sports association is saving from its electricity bill and at the same time is investing more in the club and the nursery.
The parliamentary secretary said that the government, together with the Malta Football Association, is embarking on a project to renovate the football pitches of various sports clubs.
St. John’s Vice President FC and St. John’s Mayor Trevor Fenech explained that the entire stadium lighting system has been changed to one that runs on LEDs that waste less electricity and even contribute to less pollution from -light. He said that now the club is reducing energy consumption by 40% and is contributing to a reduction of 3 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
Under this scheme benefited 45 clubs coming from various fields of sport, such as football, tennis, boules, waterpolo, athletics, basketball, judo, hockey and more various sports. The most popular investment was the replacement of floodlighting for LED systems. There were clubs that invested in replacing appliances, air-conditioners and heat pump water heaters and in new lighting systems.
