Hibernians go top with derby win

Two late second half goals gave Hibernians the win against neighbours Tarxien and moved them back on top of the premiership.

The win was deserved but Hibs had to work extremely hard for the points. They started brightly with plenty of early possession but were let down by poor finishing. Dunstan Vella had a good chance to give his side an early lead but his header went wide.

With five minutes of the first half remaining Jake Grech found himself in space inside the box but could not keep his shot on target. Hibs upped the pressure looking for a goal before the break but chances by Andre Agius and Jurgen Degbriele went begging.

After the break Jake Grech again went close, Bjorn Kristensen headed over the bar and just before the hour mark Grech missed what looked a certain goal from close range. That was his last touch as he was substituted shortly after.

A goal did eventually come Hibs way when Ferdinando Apap rose above everyone else to head home.

It became 2-0 on the 90 minute mark when Iriberri finished off a slick move by Hibs to seal the win.

In the day’s other early kick-off bottom side Senglea came from behind to earn a battling 2-1 win over Floriana.
