Minister for Education Justyne Caruana received a courtesy call from a Libyan delegation headed by Undersecretary Adel Amori G.A. which is in Malta for talks on cooperation in the education sector. This visit reciprocates a visit by Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo and Minister for Education Justyne Caruana herself in Tripoli last December.
During the meeting, Minister Caruana referred to the visit in Tripoli and the productive discussions held with Education Minister Othman Abdul, Foreign Minister Mohamed Siyala, and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Maiteeq.
Throughout this visit, the Maltese Government offered cooperation from the University of Malta and from the Maltese College of Arts, Science and Technology in terms of assistance in the teaching of English as well as educational programmes on how to build personal skills and values towards job creation and the resolution of problems and disputes without violence.
The Libyan delegation is in Malta to finalise talks started in Tripoli.
Minister Caruana reiterated that Malta and Libya share a long history of friendship and cooperation, and that Malta is keen to strengthen ties between the two countries. In this context, Minister Caruana highlighted Malta’s position on the importance of having a peaceful and prosperous Libya in the hands of the Libyans. She acknowledged the importance of the role of accessible and equitable education and training in the development of human resources to enable all citizens to participate productively and creatively in today’s global knowledge-based economy. In this regard, Minister Caruana welcomed the longstanding common interest in cooperation in all fields of education and training as part of the wider cooperation that already exists between both countries.
“Malta looks forward to increased engagement and cooperation in this field which can produce tangible results of mutual benefit for both sides”, said Minister Caruana. “We therefore look forward to the sharing of experiences in education and by building upon promising practices, to enable the building of a generation which is well educated and well prepared to work and strengthen the respective countries’ economies and culture”.
Minister Caruana also gave a brief overview of our education systems and institutions, before auguring fruitful talks during the delegation’s stay and further engagement between the two respective ministries in the months and years to come.
