Prime Minister Robert Abela along with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne visited a very important department at Mater Dei Hospital: the Department of Engineering, among other stations.
Under the halls and corridors of the hospital, this department, under the leadership of Engineer Noel Psaila, is responsible for the operational infrastructure of the hospital. In this department, is the main electrical substation, the emergency generators, plants, boilers and main chillers. Engineer Psaila explained in detail how the hospital, which is considered a small village, wants to see it deliver adequate services to all departments in the hospital and this includes the service of electricity and hot and cold water according to the necessity.
The Prime Minister also met with the fire brigade stationed directly at Mater Dei. In the event of an accident, first aid is provided by this team so that there is no need to wait for the Department of Civil Protection. They also carry out safety-related inspections and organize fire-fighting exercises in various halls and departments each week.
The visit continued with a break with the staff from the Waste Management Section where the workers are responsible for the separation of all the waste collected at the Hospital, and that therefore without this crucial Department the hospital it will not be able to operate efficiently.
The Prime Minister thanked all the workers he met, including engineers, managers, technical officers, contractors and other staff. Dr Abela expressed his appreciation for the work they do especially during the time of the pandemic where a number of workers had to change their work routine and rose to the occasion to provide all the infrastructure services needed in the hospital.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne joined the Prime Minister and thanked these workers, while emphasizing the importance of the roles of these individuals, who work behind the scenes and without which the hospital would not be able to operate.
Engineer Noel Psaila said that the team led by him is striving so that as much as possible, the hospital and all those who work in it can give the best care to every patient who enters the hospital. He concluded by urging the public to always follow the instructions issued by the health authorities.
