The notion of sustainability was tackled in a webinar organised by the Guardians of Future Generations, focusing on a sustainable society that takes care of its citizens’ wellbeing.
Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli and Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister Carmelo Abela addressed the webinar highlighting the message that a sustainable future is built on three pillars – the social, economic and environmental.
Minister Dalli said that Malta’s economic development should contribute towards an improved environment and a better society. In this way, everyone can benefit from the wealth generated. She explained that the formation of a new ministry focusing on energy, enterprise and sustainable development reflected the Government’s commitment in improving quality of life.
Minister Dalli recalled that EU countries and Malta must meet the 2050 decarbonising targets set by the European Commission. By taking these goals seriously today, their implementation will be made easier, bringing about positive change.
Minister Abela said, that it is time to start looking at new ways of measuring our country’s success, with sustainability being a clear goal, in line with the global United Nations 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
He noted that, considering the upcoming fourth industrial revolution, government and society must ensure that the development of new economic growth models embrace people and social inclusion at the centre. This will allow an equitable distribution of wealth across all levels of society.
The webinar was also addressed by the chairman of the Guardians of Future Generations, Dr Malcolm Paul Galea.
