“It remains my firm belief that the most effective way to counter terrorism in certain countries is by empowering the rule of law and strengthening the judiciary”, stated President George Vella during a visit to the International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law (IIJ).
The President noted with satisfaction the expansion of IIJ memberships and partnerships since its launch back in June 2014. He noted that the present outreach is also very satisfactory, and that the geographical representation involves countries and institutions which are direct stakeholders in addressing terrorism.
During his speech, the President explained how the IIJ’s work is a certificate of the success of this institution that has impacted a number of regions as they have consolidated parameters of justice and rule of law, in the interest of the citizens as individuals and the society at large. The IIJ improved the lives of thousands through its various initiatives in training practitioners including policy makers.
The President ended his speech by defining the work of the IIJ as a very strong contribution to global stability with the kind of horizontal cooperation between institutions being described by him as an example of multilateralism which Malta has always actively supported and promoted.
