Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government José Herrera launched the local government policy review.
This new vision aims to address the current realities, with ten pillars having been identified. These pillars will lead to the implementation of the necessary changes and projects for the benefit of the community.
The ten pillars are inclusion, the environment, cleanliness and maintenance, health, innovation and digital solutions, security, mobility and accessibility, education, national heritage and culture, as well as better and transparent service. Minister Herrera stated that the policy will be built upon these pillars.
“We are launching this process as we believe and want to see local governments and our communities be instrumental in pursuing a policy that leads to a better quality of life,” stated Minister Herrera. He continued that the goals being presented today, as part of a holistic policy, are intended to further affirm the important role that local governments play for the benefit of our communities.
Minister Herrera explained that this policy will build upon the reform that the government started implementing a year ago and stated that they will continue to carry out the necessary reforms in order to meet the expectations of the citizens.
Minister Herrera concluded that a number of specific meetings will be held with all stakeholders which will lead to an action plan which will include principles, initiatives and measures that will collectively change and improve people’s quality of life.
The press conference was also addressed by the Director General of Local Government Natalino Attard and the Adviser to the Minister for Local Government Marc Muscat.
