Malta welcomes the outcome of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) held on 7-15 November 2020 on the basis of the conclusions of the Berlin Conference, as endorsed by Resolution 2510 (2020) of the United Nations Security Council. Most notably, Malta welcomes the agreement reached by the Libyan parties to hold presidential and parliamentary elections by 24 December 2021, which it considers as a significant achievement.
This success follows and builds on the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement of 23 October 2020. In this regard, Malta continues to call on all Libyans and the international community to abide by such ceasefire agreement, thus enabling the Libyan people to pursue their path towards the establishment of sovereign and democratic institutions.
The Government augurs that the ongoing talks will lead to further achievements with regard to the implementation of the political roadmap. Malta will continue to support this process by guiding the transition period, setting timeframes for the endorsement of a new executive authority, and ensuring that constitutional arrangements are in place including for the holding elections.
It is imperative that the political process, in line with economic and social development, continue to take place, primarily led by and for Libyans, and under the auspices of the United Nations.
