On the occasion World Fisheries Day, which is going to be celebrated on the 21st November, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo together with Minister for Education and Employment Owen Bonnici announced a competition entitled ‘Fishing for Recipes’.
In Malta, this will be the first time that this day will be celebrated. The significance of this day should therefore be given the appreciation it deserves as well as the respect towards fishermen and fishing communities for the hard work this sector brings. It is important to remember that thanks to them fresh fish is being provided all year round for all Maltese and Gozitans.
Minister Anton Refalo expressed his satisfaction at the fact that the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture under his ministry is launching a competition as part of the World Fisheries Day celebrations entitled ‘Fishing for Recipes’.
Minister for Education and Employment Bonnici described how interesting this competition is and the importance attached to it while encouraging parents as well as teachers and educators to encourage students to participate. “We opened this competition for students between the ages of 9 and 15 because we saw the potential of such a competition to raise awareness about the waters that surround our country as well as educate our children on the vast species of marine animals we have.”
Students between the ages of 9 and 15 can take part in this competition. To participate in this competition, contestants must submit a recipe using local fish species, prepared together with family members, and must also submit photos of the cooking process. The aim of this competition is to make children and young people more aware and to learn about different species of local fish and traditional fish recipes. It is important to promote the consumption of local and sustainable fish species as well as to have more knowledge about the gastronomy of the Maltese Islands.
Minister Anton Refalo said that this is a very important element and that we should cherish our coastal culinary heritage to ensure that learning is passed on from one generation to the next through educational and informative activities.
The competition will be open from 21st November to 31st December 2020. The awards ceremony is scheduled for January 2021.
