The first trailer has been released for the film L’Incredibile Storia dell’Isola Delle Rose starring Elio Germano, Fabrizio Bentivoglio and Tom Wlaschiha, which will be released on Netflix on the 9th of December. The production was partially filmed in Malta.
The Netflix film is based on the real story of an engineer who in 1968 built an island 11 kilometres off the coast of Italy and declared it independent, in a direct challenge to the Italian state. The man-made platform was officially called the ‘Repubblica dell’Isola delle Rose’.
The production was partially shot in Malta with all water/sea sequences shot at the Malta Film Studios’ water tanks. It benefitted from the cash rebate incentive offered by the Malta Film Commission, with the total budget in Malta amounting to around €3 million.
Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Julia Farrugia Portelli expressed her satisfaction that yet another high-level quality production chose the Maltese islands for filming. She added that the incentives offered by the Maltese government, along with the stunning and beautiful backdrop in the middle of the Mediterranean, were key elements in attracting this production locally. We are truly honoured that the Maltese islands are at the top of many producers’ lists when scouting film locations.
“In spite of the challenging outlook in the film and TV industry due to the present circumstances, Malta will strive to continue to attract more productions this year, and I look forward to seeing this sector continue to recover and grow in the next twelve months,” stated Minister Farrugia Portelli.
Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech said that; “We are glad to have hosted the first international Netflix show at the Malta Film Studios. Having productions of a very high quality such as this one shooting at Malta Film Studios and in various locations around Malta makes us proud. We are experiencing and seeing the result of positive work done in recent years, and we will continue working harder to attract more productions of a high quality such as this one.”
