The Grand Harbor Regeneration Corporation hosted a webinar on Grand Harbor regeneration, with the support of the European Commission’s Structural Reform Support Porgramme. The management of the corporation as well as the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg and the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi took part in this webinar. Representatives from Spain and Portugal also took part, and the three countries shared best practices on urban regeneration.
Minister Ian Borg said, “cities are a living entity and regeneration is the way we can pay tribute not only to the buildings that make them up, but to the people who lived in them and to all those who look after them. as a point of reference. The Maltese Government, also thanks to European funds, has fully invested in Valletta, so much so that after years of silence, this City has come back to life. Today, after restoring the Triton Fountain, regenerating various squares, aubergines and even the ramparts, Valletta has breathed again as it deserved. Determined to continue to use resources and energy to improve the tourism product, protect our architectural heritage and improve the quality of life of residents in the capital city and in all towns and villages of our country ”.
Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi stressed that, “regeneration must be done holistically to keep the interests of people around and visitors at the forefront of the agenda.”
He said that the Marsamxett regeneration project, co-financed with European funds is a clear example of regeneration not only for the appearance of the City where the buildings were regenerated from the outside but also of the purpose as they they will begin to be used for social purposes such as housing.
Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi concluded by saying that the Maltese Government together with the European Union is prioritizing sustainable development, so in the future we will be focusing on the regeneration of more open spaces to provide the Maltese. and Gozitans with a better quality of life.
This webinar was organized with the support and assistance of the office of the Structural Reform Support Program of the European Union, which coordinated with foreign speakers who gave a detailed explanation of regeneration projects in the cities of Murcia, Barcelona. and Lisbon. The Policy Officer of this European Union program, Christoph Klockenbring, spoke about the relationship with the GHRC and the training programs that have been organized to get more information about regeneration projects in European cities.
