Minister for Education and Employment Owen Bonnici inaugurated a new block at the Żejtun Secondary School together with St Thomas More College Principal George Psaila and Head of School Anna Spiteri Meilak.
Minister Bonnici explained that: “The Żejtun Secondary School is being extended by building a floor on each existing school block. Through this extension, spread over more than 2,500 square meters, we are adding 13 normal classes, as well as 8 laboratories for science teaching, 2 classes for home economics, and classes for engineering and the design.”
He said that: “At the same school we will be developing laboratories and workshops for vocational subjects including information technology, hospitality, hairdressing, media, and textiles and fashion. Through the teaching of vocational subjects, students will be better prepared for the world of work.”
Apart from the school extension project, this project also includes the complete modernization of the existing school. The school will be made accessible to all students, through the construction of several lifts throughout the building.
This project is being carried out in different phases. Until the work is done, a number of students are learning in mobile classrooms. They are equipped with all the necessary teaching equipment, just like any other class. This is being done both to give priority to the health and safety of students, and to ensure that students continue to receive their teaching at this school instead of being sent to another school.
This will not be the last investment to be made in the Żejtun Secondary School—works on Block 4 will be effected, while further investment will be undertaken in the administration block and in landscaping of open spaces.
This project is being done through an investment of €5 million.
