On 22 September, as part of its campaign to create awareness about the concept of financial capability, ĠEMMA, supported by the HSBC Malta Foundation, awarded book vouchers to the winners of a poster competition for primary school children in Years 5, 6, 7 and 8.
The competition encouraged children to create an A4 or A3 sized graphic on the topics of budgeting, saving/spending as well as prioritisation. The designs were accompanied by a 50-word description related to the specific drawing.
The competition was opened to all state, Church and non-state schools and was organised by the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes within the Ministry for Education and Employment, with the support of the HSBC Malta Foundation and the Ministry for the Family, Children’s Rights and Social Solidarity.
The poster competition attracted many young participants who submitted incredible designs, making it difficult for the judges to select the winners from such a high-level participation. The selection was based on originality, attractiveness and neatness, their addressing the topics related to financial capability, as well as coherence in the write-up provided.
Since the competition has attracted so many participants their designs will also be exhibited at the Esplora, between 22 September to 11th October, 2020.
Minister for the Family, Children’s Rights and Social Solidarity Michael Falzon praised this initiative and said that educating children on how to effectively budget, save and spend money would definetly help them later in life. Minister Falzon added that children would also feel more responsible when faced with such life situations.
Whilst congratulating the winners, Permanent Secretary at MFCS Mark Musu emphasised the high level of creativity that was displayed in the majority of the designs and thanked all participants who fully committed themselves to this competition. He stressed that this intiative and similar others organised by ĠEMMA, together with its stakeholders, continue to instill in youngsters the importance of saving in an astute manner which will in time have a positive economic impact on the Maltese society as a whole.
Mr Musu thanked the teachers in the different schools who responded to this poster completion. Mr Musu added that the posters can be digitally viewed at https://gemma.gov.mt/poster-
ĠEMMA, HSBC Malta Foundation as well as the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes, congratulated the winners whilst also encouraging the other participants to continue participating in ĠEMMA educational initiatives which are organised from time to time.
