Malta looked to be heading for a memorable victory against the Faroe Islands in their opening fixture in the UEFA Nations League after coming from behind to lead 2-1 with less than five minutes to play.
But the Faroe’s were not finished. They drew level with three minutes left and clinched a stunning come-back on the stroke of full time to deny Malta the win.
It was the first game under new coach Devis Mangia and for the opening twenty minutes Malta survived a few scares.
Faroe Islands did find the break-through when Klæmint Olsen headed home past Bonello.
That lead lasted until the 37th minute when Nwoko, Gambin and Degabriele set up a fine move for Degabriele to place the ball beyond goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen.
The goal settled Malta who then enjoyed more possession and as the second half ticked away they went in front for the first time.
A well worked free kick from outside the box saw Luke Gambin find the unmarked Andre Agius who controlled the ball perfectly to fire past the keeper.
Football can be cruel at times and two late goals for the Faroe Islands robbed Malta of at least a point.
Coach Mangia now has to lift his players ahead of their next game at home to Latvia on Sunday.
