The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, represented Malta at the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit, in Paris, on Sunday and Monday, as EU Heads of State, and industry leaders engaged in high-level discussions on AI regulation, its geopolitical implications and Europe’s strategic approach to innovation.

Deputy Prime Minister Borg participated in a high-level meeting hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, alongside EU Heads of State and Government and tech industry leaders, to discuss Europe’s role in shaping the future of AI. Malta reaffirmed its commitment to AI policies grounded in transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, stressing that AI must align with social and environmental responsibility. Dr Borg highlighted that smaller nations must have an equal voice in shaping Europe’s AI governance to ensure that AI-driven digital transformation benefits all economies, regardless of size.

Deputy Prime Minister Borg stated that Malta is a strong supporter of the AI Action Summit as a key platform for advancing global cooperation on AI governance. He reiterated Malta’s commitment to ethical AI policies, including the implementation of UNESCO’s AI Ethics Recommendations, and to promoting AI as a driver of sustainability, digital innovation, and job creation. Through European Digital Innovation Hubs, Dr Borg stated, Malta is actively fostering AI adoption among SMEs to enhance competitiveness and upskilling in the digital economy.

As part of a high-level panel discussion featuring top AI industry leaders ranging from AMD, HP, STMicroelectronics and others, the Deputy Prime Minister underscored the balance between AI-driven innovation and ethical considerations. He emphasised that AI is not just a technological advancement but a geopolitical and economic force requiring responsible governance. He reiterated Malta’s belief in an AI framework that bolsters competitiveness and innovation while ensuring that technology is used responsibly for the greater good.

“Investing in resilient digital infrastructures and industries, removing bureaucracy while fostering digital skills and jobs is essential if we are to put our citizens first. We will continue working with our global partners to shape AI policies that serve humanity and not the other way round,” concluded Deputy Prime Minister Borg.
