The first edition of the Football for the Goals initiative, aimed at raising awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among schoolchildren has concluded successfully.
This initiative, a collaboration between Government and Inħobb il-Futbol Foundation, builds on the strong and influential reach of football to inspire action among kids on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli explained that this project calls on schools to act as ambassadors of sustainability by integrating sustainable development principles, adopt sustainable initiatives, and advocate for them. “The role of education for sustainable development is vital in positioning teachers as catalysts for change, enabling them to empower students to become knowledgeable and responsible citizens. It provides the younger generation with the essential knowhow and skills to tackle global issues like climate change and social inequality – issues that resonate with them,” stated Minister Dalli.
The 17 SDGs were adopted by global leaders in September 2015. These goals address various sectors, from health, education, innovation and climate action. Football for the Goals is part of a broader United Nations initiative that collaborates with football stakeholders and key players to harness the sport’s extensive reach and global influence.
“This initiative acknowledges the influential voice that football holds within the local community and the significant role it plays in promoting awareness of the SDGs through its widespread popularity. Football is not only the most popular sport in the world, but it is also the most accessible. It is therefore the perfect opportunity to raise awareness and encourage everyone to take action by demonstrating how sustainable practices can be integrated into children’s everyday lives, both in school and outside,” Minister Dalli concluded.
