Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli, met with the Egyptian Minister for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, where they discussed opportunities for collaboration between the two countries. Among these are the renewable energy sector, distribution infrastructure, and virtual interconnections.

As two Mediterranean countries, Malta and Egypt agreed to work together so that more Mediterranean states invest in renewable energy and transform the region into a hub for clean energy.

“Malta and Egypt are friendly nations, and together we can continue promoting the initiative we launched in Malta through MED9 for the Mediterranean to become a hub for clean energy. Both countries believe that by increasing our collaboration, we can create economic opportunities in the energy sector that will bring greater stability to the Mediterranean,” said Minister Miriam Dalli.

During this visit, they discussed innovative solutions that can help make electricity systems more resilient in the face of climate change, as shown also by the significant temperature increases both countries have experienced.

They also spoke about future projects they are currently working on, which present opportunities for collaboration. These include interconnection projects that Malta is pursuing to strengthen its links with Italy, as well as projects Egypt is working on to boost its connections with Europe. In this regard, both countries are exploring the possibility of a virtual interconnection once these projects are implemented.

Both parties agreed to continue their meetings at a technical and political level so that the relationship between the two countries can be further strengthened.

During her visit to Egypt, Minister Miriam Dalli also visited different companies in the energy sector that are involved in manufacturing innovative technologies.
