The Labour Party will hold elections for a new deputy leader and its administration in mid-September, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced on Monday.
Daniel Micallef stepped down as Deputy Leader for Party Affairs following the dramatic loss of votes in June’s European Parliament and Local Council election. Micallef said he had decided to step down several months before the elections.
Chris Fearne, who was Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs, resigned that position after he was charged in connection with the Vitals hospital deal. He had also been nominated as European Commissioner but withdrew his nomination in the wake of the Vitals allegations. However the prime minister has kept his options open and may re-nominate Fearne if he is cleared by the courts. That decision must be made by July 24 when nominations close.
