At the beginning of the week, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg led a delegation participating in the 13th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization being held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
During this international meeting, Minister Ian Borg emphasised our country’s belief in the important role of the World Trade Organization and the international system of trade regulations it represents. “The 13th Conference is an opportunity to make significant progress on a number of essential trade issues to foster more sustainable trade among the 164 countries,” stated Minister Ian Borg.
The Minister emphasised the importance of progress on the dispute resolution system, including the appellate mechanism. He stated how crucial it is for the moratorium on electronic transactions to be extended as it remains a priority to safeguard small and medium-sized businesses. He also noted Malta’s appreciation for the ongoing negotiations regarding the fisheries subsidies arrangement.
He concluded by stating that Malta supports the work being planned for the 14th Ministerial Conference to be held in Cameroon.
During his visit to the United Arab Emirates, Minister Borg had the opportunity to meet with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. During this meeting, discussions were held on the impact on trade caused by the ongoing Russian invasion in Ukraine as well as the instability in the Middle East, particularly in the Red Sea, due to recent developments in Gaza.
