‘We need to concentrate and be confident in our style of play despite of the improvement shown by the teams we are playing against’ said Women’s National Teams Head Coach Manuela Tesse ahead of the UEFA Women’s Nations League match that Malta will play against Moldova. She continued saying that ‘the girls did a good recovery after the difficult game in Latvia.’
Malta WNT held the last training session at the Centenary Stadium this evening, in preparation for tomorrow’s encounter against Moldova. Whilst speaking about this encounter, Coach Tesse said that ‘the players want to be an inspiration to other players who hope to play football in the future’. She stressed that she and the team are hoping that the Maltese will be the 12th player at the Centenary Stadium tomorrow.
Head Coach Manuela Tesse has had to make two changes from last week’s call up as both Veronique Mifsud and Maria Farrugia have been ruled out due to injury sustained in the past days. They will be replaced by Alishia Sultana, who has decided to return to National Team duties after announcing her retirement earlier this year, and Mariah Cardona respectively. Changes are therefore to be expected on tomorrow’s lineup as Maria Farrugia was in the starting eleven last Friday in Latvia.
Malta WNT managed to secure the first three points late in the game with a lone goal by Hailey Bugeja who crowned her 20th appearance for Malta. When speaking about tomorrow’s game, Bugeja said that she is hoping for a better performance from the team stressing the fact that all the players believe in their capabilities and expressed her hope of continuing this campaign in the best possible way.
Last Friday’s win has increased the anticipation for tomorrow’s game against Moldova, with Head Coach Tesse hoping to capitalise on this positive start to this UEFA Nation’s League campaign.
The two nations faced each other last in 2022, with the Malta WNT winning the encounter 3-1. Moldova have been on the losing side of the first game also played last Friday when they were defeated by Andorra in their inaugural home game. The Moldovan team are also in mourning after the tragic loss of Violeta Mitul in the beginning of September. Currently the Moldova WNT is ranked 114 in the FIFA rankings.
Malta vs Moldova will be played on the 26th of September at the Centenary Stadium (kick-off 20.00). Tickets can be bought from or from designated ticket booths at the stadium on matchday.
