Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili paid an official visit to Malta between the 7th and the 9th May 2023. During his stay in Malta, the Chairman met the Speaker of the House of Representatives Anġlu Farrugia and, will be meeting President of Malta George Vella, MP Glenn Bedingfield (Chairperson) and the members of the Foreign and European Affairs Committee.
In his meeting with his Georgian counterpart, the Speaker Anglu Farrugia referred to the excellent bilateral relations that exist between Malta and Georgia and expressed his commitment and desire to continue to work towards a longstanding relationship based on existing and new areas of cooperation.
The Speaker stated that Malta has been an active supporter of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia since its inception, and it will continue to support the EUMM mandate aimed at ensuring the avoidance of hostilities and the resumption of normal life for the local communities. The Speaker underlined Malta’s firm position of non-recognition of the so called “republics” of South Ossetia and Abkhazia and remains committed in upholding the EU policy regarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia at all levels.
The Speaker also recalled Malta’s role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, stating that despite the challenging environment, Malta remains determined to play a constructive role in promoting multilateralism in particular the protection of the rule-based international order.
During its stay in Malta, the Georgian Parliamentary delegation had the opportunity to experience the cultural richness of the capital city, Valletta.
