On Tuesday 25 th April 2023 The commemorative service of ANZAC took place at the Pieta Military Cemetery.
A large number of Australian and New Zealand service personnel are buried in the cemetery the highest concentration on Malta.
The Service commemorated those Australians and New Zealanders who died in both World Wars.
Many of them who were wounded or contracted sickness at Gallipoli and were evacuated to Malta.
Thousands were saved and convalesced but many others were buried in Maltese ground.
In the Second World War, Royal Australian and Royal New Zealand Air Forces alongside other Commonwealth Air Forces flying from basis in Malta defended Malta during which time many service personnel Lives were Lost.
The other Commonwealth Air Forces losses are Commemorated at the Malta Memorial which is located in the area of Floriana, to the south side of the Triton Fountain close to City Gate, the entrance to Malta’s capital city, Valletta.
His Excellency the President of Malta, Dr George Vella was in attendance and on behalf of the Maltese people laid a Wreath. Other Wreaths were then laid by various High Commissioners and other dignitaries.
The band of the AFM played the last post, after a Minute’s Silence.
The chairman of the Malta GC Branch of the Royal British Legion, Peter Gauci,had the honour of laying a wreath to honour all those fallen service personnel.
The Royal British Legion along with other Service Organisations on this occasion The Royal Air Force Association and the George Cross Island Association paraded their Standards.
